What Is Ionic Air Purification?

ionic air purifiers

Instead of relying on fans to move air through filters, ionic air purifiers release a stream of ions that electrify dust, dander, smoke, and pollen.  Airborne pollutant particles respond by picking up the negative charge and become attracted to the positively charged collection plates inside the machine.  Most ionic air purifiers run silently, unless they are designed to suck in the charged particles (which can stick to TV screens, tables, and other charged surfaces)—usually, there are no motors, moving parts or fans involved, and no filters to replace.

Ionic air purifiers do release ozone—about as much as a busy photocopy machine in an office.  This in itself is a source of controversy for some, though ozone is thought by many to be one of the most powerful oxidants and germicides in existence.

Ecoquest air purifiers

Ecoquest air purifiers are about the size of a small computer monitor.  The screen on the back catches dust, and there is an ultraviolet (UV) light that is designed to burn off bacteria and allergens.  The purification plate is the final piece of the puzzle in the air cleaning method for this machine, and it has become a bit controversial, as Ecoquest purifier products do emit ozone, which some say smell like bleach in the air on a high setting.  The machine also includes a 5-speed fan to assist in the process of moving the air.  The UV light on the unit glows visibly when in use.  The amount of purification desired can be set based on the square footage of the area, and the user also has the option of setting a cycle of 2, 4, or 6 hours of continuous air purification.

Ecoquest air purifiers receive favorable consumer reviews in terms of its cleaning abilities.  The filter needs to be cleaned monthly, because daily air purification uses the filter as a first line of defense.
